Thea Haven--An Opinion Poll

So, I've been fascinated to hear from a few people that they didn't come away from PA finding Thea a sympathetic character. This really shocks me, and I thought I'd toss this question out into the Parallel Realm here:
--Did you come away liking or disliking Thea?
--For either answer, what was your reasoning?

To me, Thea is a classic emotional antagonist in PA--but we get to see her grow, too. Without spoiling anything about the book, I really worked to turn her from that unsympathetic character so that by the end, you'd really *feel* for her.

Anyway, just curious. Thoughts on Thea? :) D

I felt for her. She grew up knowing that she was going to marry Jared one day. And to meet a woman that he has known for a couple of hours has him head over heels in love.

Ugh.

Nope. Don't like her...not one bit. I'm probably fifty pages from finishing and she hasn't redeemed herself for me yet.

I can't put my finger on a tangible reason, really. I don't trust her and I think she's a bit of a whiner.

I truly love Marco and I really want to like Thea because I want Marco to find his happiness. Since I know you have a talent for world building and you're a helluva writer, I'm sure that you will make sure that Thea deserves Marco in this next parallel universe. I have no doubt.

Ack, Mel! You're killing me! You read the part where she remembers going to see him when she was a little girl? Bringing him the flowers? And then the flowers she gives him at the end? You are past that, I think. Man, if that doesn't do it for you, I don't think I can help you out! LOL!!!! :) BUt you'll love her in the next book. Everyone who has read that book absolutely loves it--so far everyone says it's a better read than PA. Of course, we all love PA (of couuurrsse), but still. :)
HUGS!!

Hmmm, how to answer without giving stuff away?

Okay here goes . . .

I felt compassion for her until I learned of the thing that shall remain unsaid ;) I found that pretty horrible even if I saw how it got to that point.

That being said, there was much to like about Thea but the 'thing that shall remain unsaid' made me go 'if only it could be changed.'

Hehehehe, considering the themes the Parallel Universe deals with, and knowing who figures prominently in Parallel Heat, I expect this change could happen :)

I do love how Marco came full circle in Parallel Attraction. Like Mel I loved him. Scott is also extremely intriguing and I suspect his unique heritage will come into play even more prominently as the series progresses ;)

Not to upset you, but I didn't really like Thea either. Marco and Scott, YES! And yes I remember the white flower scene, sorry.

Joyce, that doesn't upset me! I know that everyone will love her in the next book. As Bonnie says, when things could be, um, different... it gets very interesting.

Plus, Scott is my absolute FAVE and something great happens with him, very involved, in HEAT. :) Hugs!

All right, I reread the section to see if I could figure out what it is that bugs me, and I think this is it.

I get that she loves Jared. I get that she's disappointed and bitter. And even though I don't like her, I understand WHY she is the way she is. She's a very real character. Just one I don't like. *grin*

And yes, she did the right thing bringing the flowers to Jared. But it just seemed such a quick turn-around from someone who, just 5 pages earlier, was so vehemently opposed to the marriage that I don't trust it. She was cold and heart broken and then suddenly, one memory from her past changes her? In my world, that makes her very suspicious...like, she's just biding time with Jared so she can betray him later.

So, I really look forward to HEAT because I need to like her for Marco. Otherwise, she can get in line behind me for the role of #1 lady love for that bad boy. :)

I love this discussion! Without spoiling anyone (thanks, y'all for being sensitive to that) I will just say that your reactions actually make sense to me upon further reflection. I'd hoped she would be more sympathetic by book's end, but at the same time, these books are all about that hairline fracture between what's possible and what's real. That choices are swinging pendulums and we have the capacity for good or evil. So I feel confident that if you take the journey into HEAT--which I'm sure you will--you'll love her then. And you get PLENTY of Mr. McKinley, who let's face it--is pretty freaking hunky and hot. And lots of Scott. He's the one I'm in love with. hee hee.
